The Tastiest Healthy Breakfasts
When it’s a Monday morning and the kids still are not on their way to school, it’s easy to pick up a Pop Tart as your breakfast, or to skip breakfast altogether. But while skipping breakfast sets you up for a day of overeating to compensate for that loss, the Pop Tart is just as bad.
On the surface, it seems too good to be true. The kids like it, it’s easy, and it’s relatively inexpensive. But it’s too good to be true. Processed breakfast foods like that are packed with sugar and artificial food coloring, meaning that you’ll be hungry way before lunch. Eating a bad breakfast is akin to waking up to a candy bar (and they often have the same amount of high fructose corn syrup, which inhibits brain growth).
What makes a good breakfast? You should focus on making sure you’re avoiding too much sugar while bringing in protein, carbohydrates to break down that protein, and fiber to digest it all. Most of our favorites unite all of these elements into breakfasts that are delicious, quick, and easy to make.
If you still want a sweet breakfast, there’s a way to do that. Oatmeal, even in its instant form, is a healthy choice. The fiber and carbohydrates keep you full while providing you with fertile ground to play with! Add cinnamon, which is anti-inflammatory, for some sweetness alongside a dash of honey and milk. Chia seeds add fiber, while fresh fruit, even in the form of a banana, combine sweetness with vitamins.
Greek yogurt is another fantastic choice. It has almost two times as much protein as regular yogurt, which will keep you full. Plus, you’re getting a healthy dose of calcium included. If you’re looking for a sweet edge to it, add fruit and honey for a more flavorful experience.
Finally, Instagram’s favorite breakfast. If you follow a food blogger, chances are you’ve seen avocado toast with eggs before. This breakfast is deceptively easy, delicious, and definitely worthy of its own Instagram post. Pop your bread of choice in the toaster (whole wheat is the healthiest), chop up an avocado, and poach an egg. The way to poach the egg is by putting a dash of white vinegar in boiling water, and then breaking the egg into swirling water. Let it sit for under 3 minutes, and you’ll have a perfect egg. Grab the toast from the toaster, mash the avocado bits onto it, and drop an egg on top of that. Some salt, some pepper, and you’re done!
