DC is the nation’s capital, and, as such, home to some of the most spirited and anticipated Independence Day celebrations in the nation.
For the most classic Fourth of July experience, accompany your friends and family to the National Independence Day Parade, beginning at 11:45am at Constitution Avenue and 7th Street NW continuing to 17th Street NW. The Parade is typical in that it features celebratory floats and marching bands, and highlights our servicemen and women. For some excellent people watching and quintessential American fun go to this parade. It is unlike any other in the country, precisely because it is occurring in the heart of the nation. Take advantage of your location.
Follow up the parade by visiting a special piece of history. The National Museum of American History to see in person the flag that prompted Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner.
If you are looking to really taking advantage of the historic origins of the day, The National Archives is your spot. Check out this list of events, including dramatic reenactments. Don’t worry, the parade goes right by the building, so you won’t miss out!
Maybe paying homage to history isn’t first on your 4th to do list. Head to a Nationals game to experience the quintessential American pastime instead. Nothing says America quite like baseball, beer, and a hotdog.
Before you head to the Mall for an unparalleled fireworks extravaganza, go to A Capitol Fourth. The National Symphony Orchestra’s free concert runs for 90 minutes on the US Capitol’s West Lawn. This musical rendition begins at 8pm, but the doors open at 3pm so you can set up shop early.
Fourth of July fireworks are the holiday’s requirement. Cap off your day with a view of the spectacular show on the National Mall. The show starts around 9pm and is one-of-a-kind, lighting up the city’s monuments for 17 minutes. There is nothing as exquisite as watching fireworks with a view of all of the monuments that symbolize what makes this nation so special.
However if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and hoards of kids evading their bedtimes, scout out a rooftop or restaurant with a view in advance. Planning your day ahead can alleviate much of the holiday stress and ensure that you are able to fully enjoy the pyrotechnic explosions we Americans so love.
