Spruce Up your Backyard Space

Summer is the perfect time to check off those home renovations you’ve been putting off since you abandoned your New Year’s Resolution on January 2nd. Since we here at DHM are clearly pro-backyard parties, we have some DIY ideas to refresh your backyard.

  • Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is all the rage these days because of the beautiful results anyone can get. If I can do it, so you can you! Annie Sloan’s paint is extremely versatile and easy to use. Make old furniture look like new, or fashion your old table into a shabby chic piece with an antique look. Annie Sloan’s website provides useful tutorials that demonstrate just how easy it is to grab a paint brush and inexpensively revamp all sorts of things you already own.

  • Are you looking for a new outdoor table near your casual seating area? Try a large galvanized bucket as the base with a round piece of wood as the topper. This will add a classy yet organic feel to your backyard, and be functional as well.

  • Bring the indoors outdoors. Replace one of your old chandeliers and move it outdoors. Or, go antiquing for an inexpensive chandelier. Repurpose the ex-light fixture to be a birdfeeder. Not only will this add fun and fresh décor to your backyard, it will draw nature to you and make your backyard a scenic hangout spot.

  • Feeling like it’s too hot to be outside? No covered patio? We are here to help. Ok, you're right, you have to do the work. Rig some shade with an inexpensive curtain rod from Target or Ikea. The price will be worth it to keep your guests cool and allow you to utilize your outdoor space all summer long.

  • Do something unique with your pots; bury them! It sounds like a lot of work, and frankly (depending on your outdoor environment), it might be. But, check out how great it can look! Keep your original pots with their plants, but plant the pots as well!
