Where To Find DC's Best Cappuccino

As much as we love Washington’s dynamism and vibrancy, we also have a soft spot for the leisurely place of Italian life. Although the Italian embassy provides some relief from fast-paced District life, few things are more luxurious and relaxing than the perfect cappuccino. While Starbucks is great in a pinch, nothing compares to the thick foam and elegant espresso (and reasonable size) of a truly Italian cappuccino. Whether it’s a brief holdover on your way to work, or some weekend cappuccini with friends, here are some of our favorite places to get your Italian—and caffeine—fix.

It’s uniquely American, but Baked & Wired’s cappuccino isn’t. Before shopping in Georgetown, grab a cappuccino and then pick out a “cakecup” to pair it with. If it’s the morning, order a Strawberry cupcake—the fresh strawberries mixed in mean it’s nutritious, right? Otherwise, the Dirty Chai cupcake strikes the perfect balance between spicy and sweet. The secret’s out, however, so expect long lines on the weekends.

If you’re in Dupont, cross off something on your to-do list and wander through the Sunday morning farmer’s market. Pick up fresh fruit, vegetables, and even floral arrangements and then make your way up Connecticut Avenue to Dolcezza, a coffee-and-gelato shop. Although it’s one of several, the Dupont location provides a cozy respite from the hustle and bustle with a fantastic (and appropriately-sized) cappuccino. Plus, if you’ve just picked up a great new book at Kramerbooks, stay into the afternoon and order a gelato before you head out!

If you’re a coffee snob, chances are you’ve heard of Philadelphia-based La Colombe, who has recently set up shop in the Mount Vernon Square neighborhood. It sits down an alleyway, adding to the Washington insider feeling of this great secret! The space is elegant and clean, meaning it’s a great place to escape the clutter and chaos of everyday life.
